Camtasia Mac 2.0 Out Now

TechSmith just launched Camtasia 2.0, a popular screen casting application for the Mac. The update adds many features. Some of the new nifty ideas are added annotation support, improved editor controls, and a nice blur effect to block out sensitive information.

Key Features:

Mobile and hardware device frames enable content to look as though it’s being played on a device such as the iPad, iPhone or Mac.
Graphic annotations such as speech bubbles, arrows, shapes, lines and text give users more options to create more engaging videos.
Blur functionality allows users to block out sensitive or private text or images.
Cursor FX highlights the mouse positioning and where it clicks on the screen to help viewers more easily follow the action.
Extend Frame saves time by enabling users to lengthen a video frame to give more time to highlight specific elements in that frame, or to provide more narration time.
Tilt and restore animations make it easy for users to manipulate video into a more effective display.
Effects timelines make it easier to create custom effects within a screen recording.
Great improvements to overall performance and user experiences.

In addition to the visual effects, the new version of Camtasia for Macintosh also offers mobile and hardware device frames that give your videos the appearance of playback on a mobile device, cursor highlighting so your videos automatically zoom in on the place where your mouse or cursor is on screen, and new frame and timeline extension tools that lengthen video frames or squeeze in some visual effects without losing audio sync.

Camtasia for Mac 2.0 voted as Top 10 Mac App.

Mashable has crowned the new Camtasia for Mac version 2 as one of 10 Best Mac Apps of 2011.

Christina Warren writes “The race for “best screen capture Mac app” got a lot more stiff with the release of TechSmith’s Camtasia 2 for Mac. At $99.99, the app goes head-to-had with Telestream’s excellent ScreenFlow 3.

ScreencastCamp is a gathering of screencasters and visual communication aficionados wanting to network, learn, and collaborate on the art of screencasting.

The event relies on the passion and creativity of the attendees—all sessions, discussions, and demos are led by attendees sharing their knowledge. The program isn’t determined beforehand—it’s created the first day by the participants.

Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. ScreencastCamp follows the BarCamp model–an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment.

TechSmith trainers, developers, video staff and evangelists will be onsite and sharing their knowledge too.

I am scared, very scared

I have to tell you something, but I don’t have much time…

Something strange has happened over at SnagitGuide.

They started experimenting with Snagit, the screen capture software when they discovered something. Something horrifying I cannot fully comprehend or even begin to explain. And I am afraid my time is running out.

I will try to get more information to you shortly, but I think they are watching me…

I am scared, very scared.

Tips Before Recording with Camtasia

I often get a specific question from frustrated Camtasia users. They have started up a project, recorded their video and are working with editing or output, just to realize that some things aren’t possible to fix after the recording is finalized.

Here is a collection of a few tips that are important to think about before you start recording your Camtasia videos.

The absolutely most common problem is that the dimensions of the video are incorrect.

If you aren’t doing a project that need different video dimensions than normal I urge you to stick with the Camtasia Studio preset dimensions. I normally use the 1280×720 size because it works great with the Youtube HD format among others.

Nothing is more frustrated than realizing that after capturing an hour of video you realize that the recording size you set up will be stretched out by different video applications and look weird when played to the audience.

So if you are going to record an application on your computer, first set your Camtasia dimensions and then set your application to fit in the recording window, not the other way around.

I do not recommend recording all of your screen. It often takes too much resources and is seldom beneficial to the viewer.

Other things to think about before recording with Camtasia

If you want to record audio while recording your screen, then be sure to test the audio recording/microphone beforehand and have a script or at least bullet points written down.
Make sure that your surroundings are as quiet as possible. Close windows and doors, and take away that squeak toy from the dog.
Practice what you are going to say a couple of times.
Clean up your desktop, open up the windows/applications you are going to record and close down any that will not be in the screencast. If you are using a lot of different toolbars in your browser for example, turn these off to have less clutter in your recording area.
If you use reminders, pop-ups for meetings and similar, be sure to turn them off. The same goes for websites with pop-ups. Set your internet browser to block pop-ups if you are going to record web pages.
Practice moving your mouse around. Try to avoid to quick movements but instead move it in a slow, fluid motion

And if you are using pip (picture-in-picture), don’t forget to brush your teeth
